Compare linux vs mac os x7/2/2023 ![]() MacOS is too locked down for them, whereas GNU/Linux is free as in freedom and cost. Server guys get much closer to the hardware, and thus need to have more control. Macs are light weight, have relatively solid build quality, acceptable performance, decent keyboard, great battery life, and suspend/resume that is nearly immediate - nothing about the machine itself gets in the way of them simply getting work done, and they could care less about the underlying hardware beyond the 'cool' factor of owning a Mac. A web developer is not going to concern themselves with having to tweak and/or maintain their operating environment beyond what immediately affects their day to day workflow. I would think that web developers prefer Macs because they 'just work'. You also don't need much horsepower, because all your content runs on the server, not the local machine. If you are doing web development, any unix-y development environment should do, because they all have Python/Ruby/Perl/Apache/nginx/BASH/etc.
